Director: François Ozon Starring: Catherine Denueve, Gérard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini Running time: 103 mins
Subject: One time most beautiful woman in the world, Catherine Deneuve plays Suzanne Pujol, “potiche” (trophy wife) to a right snappy bastard – factory owner and unenlightened seventies patriach, Robert Pujol (Fabrice Luchini). Themes of man -v- woman are as glaring as the eye-watering seventies colour palette and the eerie mood shifts that characterised Swimming Pool are steam-rolled with candid confrontations. It would be ridiculous but for the droll Frenchness, which seems to wink at you and say, “What a gas”. The best line is reserved for a bloated Deperdieu, an ex-lover of Suzanne’s who’s never stopped holding a candle but realises that times have changed. “I’m not the ardent truck driver who once led you into the woods,” he says forlornly. Poor Gérard.
Like: Carry on… French royalty
Core truth: De nerve of Deneuve will out.
