46 – Manderlay (2005)

Director: Lars von Trier Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Isaach De Bankolé, Danny Glover Running time: 139 mins

Subject: Utterly pointless sequel to 2003’s brilliant Dogville. Bryce Dallas Howard assumes Nicole Kidman’s character, Grace, and every step causes wistful nostalgia to her predecessor. This time round the small town defined by chalk instead of walls is Manderlay, a former slave plantation liberated then presided over by Grace as the ex-slaves make the transition to free men. Predictably, all does not go smoothly and the uninspiring message proves that just because something’s controversial, it doesn’t mean it’s interesting.

Like: Dogville minus tense dramatic structure and compelling performances.

Core truth: Yawn.
