43 – Greenberg (2010)

Director: Noah Baumbach Starring: Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans Running time: 107 mins

Subject: Roger Greenberg (Stiller) wants to do nothing for awhile which his old-flame, Beth (Jennifer Jason Leigh) remarks is, “brave at our age.” Fresh from a psychiatric hospital with youthful hopes of a record deal dashed, Greenberg with his cactus-like personality shows a skill for wounding the gentle souls around him. Rhys Ifans puts in an impressively downbeat performance (no vodka shots to the eye here) and there’s a small role for the joyous Juno Temple, however it’s Greta Gerwig’s Florence Marr who provides the forgiveness of which all misanthropes secretly dream.

Like: The younger years of Royal Tenenbaum.

Core truth: You can’t just do nothing.
