29 – Crimes and Misdemeanours (1989)

Director: Woody Allen Starring: Martin Landau, Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston Running time: 104 mins

Subject: Accomplished double storyline in which a typical Allen comedy of slight misdemeanours is thrown into relief by a darker drama of criminal proportions. Genuine lols are dolled out without sacrificing the thrilling tone. The two strands come together for party chit-chat in a casual finale that underscores the warm observational comedy with a surprisingly sinister comment.

Is Alan Alda awesome as a pompous TV exec? Why yes he is. How intuitive.

Is Mia Farrow a quietly stunning love interest? Duh, this is a Woody Allen film.

Core truth:  We choose the conscience we can live with.
