Director: Woody Allen Starring: Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest, Barbara Hershey, Michael Caine, Woody Allen Running time: 103 mins
Subject: Family events are the punctuation of this collection of chapters centring around the love lives of three sisters. There are some fine lines (“I had a great evening. It was like the Nuremberg trials”) and, whenever he’s on screen, Allen is a joy. But – at the risk of being burned at the stake – the relentlessly wordy scenes verge into tiresome and the stellar cast feels somewhat frittered.
Like: Intellectual New Yorker take on Short Cuts.
Core truth: If you decide life isn’t worth living, Duck Soup rather than God will convince you otherwise.
