22 – The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972)

Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder Starring: Margit Castensen, Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann Running Time: 124mins

Subject: The clue’s in the name. Big time. Why does Petra cry bitter tears? Why does anyone. It’s that pesky love disease.

The Look: My god he’s done it again. That Fassbinder. Each shot is a perfectly framed portrait. The entire film takes place in one apartment but never looks dull thanks to Poussin’s Midas and Bacchus which takes up an entire wall. Wardrobe is lush with the all-female cast wearing their characters in their dresses.

Core truth: “Accepting an emotion, or love, or a need – requires a greatness which most people don’t possess. That’s why things usually get very nasty.”
