18 – Shame (2011)

Standard

Shot with the originality of a Turner-prize winning artist, Shame finds its protagonist Brandon (Michael Fassbender) blowing about in a storm of sex addiction. Into this Beckett-like fatalism bursts sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan), an equally damaged but contrastingly dynamic character whose attempts to push the boundaries of Brandon’s mental prison lead to ugly scenes and subtle clues about their past.

Like: A unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

Core truth: “We’re not bad people but we come from a bad place.”

CINEMA: BFI.
