17 – Despair (1978)

Standard

Fassbinder’s realisation (with a script adaptation by Tom Stoppard) of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel is stolen by Dirk Bogarde’s commanding portrayal of the batshit crazy Hermann Hermann. The film’s gorgeous colour palette, from Hermann’s lilac-infused chocolate factory to to the rosy platinum of his sex kitten wife, Lydia (Andréa Ferréol) linger in the mind long after the peculiar plot is forgotten.

Like: Delicious chocolate containing large nut.

Core truth: Fear eats the soul.

CINEMA: BFI.
