Having an unconventional hero in Barney (Paul Giamatti) does not mitigate the fact that he is condescending, unlikeable and marries two gorgeous women with the ennui of someone settling on their third favourite sandwich. What is supposed to be a realistic slice of life is just the dramatic bits strung together with no art or suspense. You wait for this film to take off but it never does. The most notable thing about Barney’s Version is that it takes the talents of Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike, Paul Giamatti and Minnie Driver and drowns them in guff. Extraordinary.
Like: Watching an offensive snail try to cross the road.
Core truth: Buy a nice dual plot in the cemetary.
