2 – La Ronde (1950)

A dashing narrator (Anton Walbrook) escorts us through the overlapping love lives of ten characters in Vienna of 1900. The couplings grow repetitive but are elevated every time the well-dressed and kindly Walbrook steps into the story. His delight at love’s carousel is infectious.

Like: Mysteries of Lisbon minus 70 percent of its running time and plot layering.

Core truth: (as sung in sotto voice by Walbrook)
“They turn and turn
my characters turn
As night turns to day
and joy to pain…”
